His Excellency Te Beretitenti Taneti Maamau officially launched the seawall construction project during the ground-breaking ceremony held last Thursday, 26 March 2026 at Te Kawai ae Boou, Bonriki Village. This important ground-breaking ceremony was witnessed by invited guests including Members of the Diplomatic Corps and staff, UNPOS staff, Secretaries, Church Leaders, Old Men, Women and Community Members from Te Kawai ae Boou Village.
In his remarks, His Excellency Te Beretitenti acknowledged the Government of Australia, UNOPS, Government Ministries, Te Kawai ae Boou Community for their assistance and support towards coastal protection of vulnerable areas from the impact of climate change. Coastal protection at Te Kawai ae Boou is critical to protect the water reserves and the airport runway.
“This important ground-breaking ceremony reflects our Kiribati traditional culture of honouring the custodians of the land, whose blessing we respectfully seek to be upon us all, especially the construction workers, as they commence building the seawall. It also calls upon Te Kawai ae Boou community members to assist the workers during the construction until it finishes and to take good care of the seawall afterwards.”, His Excellency stated in his remarks.
This project is part of the Kiribati-Australia Climate Security Initiative (KACSI) under the “Tobwaan te Reitaki” Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023 as part of the Critical Economic Infrastructure Cooperation between the Governments of Kiribati and Australia. This project’s implementation is supported by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), working closely with key ministries, stakeholders, and local contractors.
This is the second site for the seawall construction. The construction of the seawall had already commenced at Site 1, Tungaru Central Hospital, in Nawerewere. The seawall is expected to be completed this year, 2026.
