The Government of Kiribati will instigate Alert Level 3 for the whole of South Tarawa and Betio effective from Monday 24th January 2022 to Thursday 27th January 2022.

According to the updates from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services on the contact tracing and the testing of primary contacts, there are two new confirmed positive cases outside the quarantine including one probable case. This means that in total, a total of 3 confirmed positive cases outside the quarantine. The other probable case was tested negative but have the symptoms such as cough, nausea/vomiting, sore throat, and myalgia, and will continue to be monitored.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has identified and traced the contacts of these two additional positive cases including the other probable case, for testing and quarantine to contain further transmission.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has also conducted another testing on the family of the first positive case and confirmed that they continued to be negative.

Government urged the public to adhere to and comply with the health directions issued by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services such as social distancing and ban of all gatherings, no hand shaking, mandatory of wearing face mask in public including on public transports, regular hand wash with soap, covering mouth when coughing etc.

While South Tarawa and Betio is on Alert Level 2 at the moment, it is important for the public to make preparations before instigation of Alert Level 3 on Monday 24th January 2022. In Alert Level 3, the following conditions will apply for South Tarawa and Betio only,

- Lock-down with 24 hours curfew.

- All Government Offices and SOEs will be closed and work remotely from home, except for essential and emergency services.

- The private sector will remain open to deliver essential services to the public.

- People MUST stay at home – may only leave their homes for essential work or to access emergency services or for essential food or other shopping.

- Access to these emergency services and essential services will be zoned to limit the movement of people.

- No public transportation.

- All kava bars, liquor bars, and night clubs will be closed.

- All kinds of social gatherings are banned.

Buota village in North Tarawa will continue to be under lockdown until further notice.

Further updates will be provided before the commencement of Alert Level 3 on Monday 24th January 2022.
